Every load is built around one principle: more pellets on target at the distances pheasants actually flush.
For 12-gauge pheasant loads, #4 through #6 shot covers the vast majority of hunting situations. For early season birds in light cover at 25 to 35 yards, #6 shot with bismuth or a bismuth and steel stack gives you pellet count and clean kills. For late-season roosters flushing wild at 40 yards or beyond, step up to #4 or #5 in a higher density material. Shot size alone does not tell the whole story. Pellet density matters more than size once you start pushing distance. A bismuth #5 at 40 yards carries more energy than a lead #4 at the same range.
It depends on where you hunt. Nontoxic pheasant loads are required on many federal and state public lands, and that list has grown in recent years. Kansas, South Dakota, and several other top pheasant states have expanded nontoxic requirements on specific wildlife areas. If you hunt private ground exclusively, lead is still legal in most states. But HEVI-Bismuth pheasant loads and HEVI-Steel pheasant loads perform well enough that a lot of hunters have stopped carrying two boxes. One nontoxic load that actually works eliminates the decision entirely.
Yes, and the difference matters. Dove loads run lighter, typically 7/8 to 1 ounce of #7.5 or #8 shot in a 12 or 20 gauge, because doves are small, fast-moving birds. Pheasant loads need larger pellets to break through feathers and reach vitals on a big rooster. HEVI-Hammer Dove is purpose built for high-volume dove shooting with nontoxic shot. Running a heavy pheasant load at a dove field is overkill. Running a dove load at a flushing rooster is a cripple waiting to happen.
Bismuth is safe for older fixed-choke guns, including vintage doubles and pumps not rated for steel. It is softer than tungsten and will not damage barrel walls or choke constrictions the way steel can in a tight choke. That matters for a lot of upland hunters running heirloom guns their grandfather carried. Full choke is fine with bismuth. Damascus barrels are a different situation. Have any Damascus gun evaluated by a qualified gunsmith before running modern loads through it regardless of shot material.
Bismuth is the closest performing nontoxic alternative to lead for upland game shotgun applications. The density sits around 9.6 g/cc versus lead at 11.3 g/cc, close enough that shot size adjustments are minimal, and bismuth patterns well through the chokes most upland hunters already run. Hunters coming off lead who try steel often feel the performance gap immediately at distance. Bismuth closes most of that gap. For pheasant specifically, HEVI-Bismuth Upland in #4 or #5 is where most hunters land after one season of real-world comparison.
