10 Gauge Shotshell FAQs

For pass shooting high geese, hunting open fields with pressured birds, or any situation where you need consistent patterns past 45 yards, 10 gauge shotgun shells still have no real equal. The bore diameter and payload capacity are simply larger than what a 3.5 inch 12 gauge can deliver. HEVI tungsten 10 gauge loads are built specifically to pull maximum performance from that platform. Steel at those distances runs out of energy. Tungsten does not.

The 10 gauge carries more shot. Most 10 gauge turkey loads push 1.75 to 2 oz of payload versus roughly 1.5 oz in a 12 gauge 3.5 inch shell. Put tungsten or bismuth behind that payload and you are sending a denser pattern to a 10 inch circle at 40 to 60 yards than any 12 gauge configuration can match. Open timber and wide field shots where gobblers hang up at distance — that is exactly where the 10 gauge advantage shows up on the ground.

Shot sizes #5 through #7 cover most 10 gauge turkey applications. Go smaller with TSS. Tungsten Super Shot at 18 g/cc packs far more pellets per ounce than lead or bismuth while still delivering lethal energy past 50 yards, so a #7 TSS load hits a gobbler's vitals with a pellet count that would surprise most hunters used to running lead #4s or #5s. Pattern your exact choke combination before season. No two guns print the same.

HEVI 10 gauge shells are designed for modern 10 gauge guns in solid mechanical condition. Tungsten and bismuth loads both require extended, ported chokes rated specifically for hard shot — do not run them through full chokes marked for lead only. Check your manufacturer's approved constriction ratings before you load up. The gun is fine. The wrong choke is where problems start.

Yes. The 10 gauge lineup includes tungsten and bismuth options well beyond standard 10 gauge steel shot. Steel gets the job done at close range, but bismuth is safe for older fixed-choke guns and delivers density closer to lead. Tungsten loads step up to 10.5 g/cc and above, carrying real energy at ranges where steel patterns blow apart. For hunters running the 10 gauge specifically because they need more performance at distance, tungsten is the answer.
